(May 6) The Plungers looked more like the Fischer Lumber Company as they continued their torrid hitting with eleven hits to down QA Mall 14 – 1.
Eight of the Plunger’s hits came in the first three innings leading to four runs in the first, four in the second, and five in the third to post an insurmountable lead. The big blows were delivered by Nicholas Nishi (3 singles), Jack McLeod (double, single), and Isle Raftery (double, single). Gabriel Ingraham-Brown, Jaxen Barnes, Lino Marioni, and Neale Foody added a single apiece to add to the attack.
“We were having a lot of fun hitting the ball and running the bases”, said Marioni. “Coach was enjoying it so much he didn’t notice, or feel, the very accurate bird that got him on the back. In fact, we slowed down on offense when he took his jacket off. We shouldn’t have told him about it”.
Behind solid pitching performances by starter Raftery, who went four, and reliever Foody, the Plungers made crucial plays to keep the Maulers from scoring until the final frame. Shortstop James Overly snagged a tough infield blooper to end the fifth, and various clean plays were made on grounders to the infield.
“Isle kept the ball down in the zone”, said Foody. “He mixed it up well and he throws from the side so he had them off balance the whole time. He struck out nine of the thirteen batters he faced. He had it going on”!
