(April 25) Fourteen combined strikeouts between starter Nicholas
Nishi and closer James Overly proved too much for Café Ladro as the
Plungers won decisively 11 – 1. Nishi pitched four solid innings
striking out eleven Baristas while Overly closed the game by striking
out the side.
“They kept pressure on Ladro by staying in the strike zone”, said
catcher Conner Garrett. “These guys are veterans and they know how to
pitch. Pitching is so important in this league, and they kept their
players off balance and off the bases. Pitching was the story of today’s
game”.
The Plungers struck early with five runs in the top half of the first
highlighted by a two RBI double by Jaxen Barnes. Barnes also started a
rally in the fifth with a lead off triple.
“I was seeing the ball well today”, said Barnes. “We haven’t had many
sunny game days so maybe a little warmth helped me stay loose. I don’t
like being cold you know”.
The Plungers were demons on the base paths as all Plungers scored at
least one run with Isle Raftery scoring twice.
“Coach put the steal sign on so I just kept running”, said Raftery. “We
sometimes play small ball because one run can be the difference in the
game”.
For their outstanding play, Nishi and Banes were awarded game balls.
